Meditation: The Ultimate Life Hack for Reducing Stress and Boosting Happiness – 2023
Let’s take a look into meditation and how it’s become today’s ultimate go-to life hack for reducing stress, boosting happiness and generally supporting our overall wellness.
Embarking on a journey to discover the roots is like traveling through time, except without the DMC DeLorean time machine. Exploring the ancient wisdom that has been passed down for millennia, I’ve always been fascinated by the practice, which can be traced back to around 3000 B.C. Some experts even suggest that our Neanderthal ancestors might have possessed meditative capabilities – who knew they were so Zen?
A Mental Workout for Inner Calm
Derived from the Latin word ‘meditatum,’ meditation encompasses a range of techniques aimed at cultivating heightened awareness and achieving a state of inner calm and stability (both mentally and emotionally). It’s like a mental workout, minus the sweat and sore muscles.
Key aspects of meditation include:
- Cultivating heightened awareness
- Achieving inner calm and stability
- Mental and emotional well-being
Ancient India and China: The Early Days of Meditation
My quest to learn about the history of this ancient stress management practice led me to the earliest documented evidence found in ancient India around 1500 B.C. In historical records from the Hindu tradition of ‘Vedantism,’ references to the practice of ‘jhana’ or ‘dhyana’ reveal the ancient Indian roots. Meanwhile, in ancient China during the third and sixth centuries, the philosopher Laozi left behind writings that foreshadowed the meditation techniques observed in later centuries. Terms like ‘Shou Zhong,’ meaning “guarding the middle,” and ‘Bao Yi,’ translating to “embracing the one,” echo the meditative practices that would later evolve.

The Widespread Adoption of Meditation
Although these connections to China and India are significant, the widespread adoption across various cultures and religions, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, makes it challenging to pinpoint its exact origin. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack of ancient wisdom.
Cultures and religions that adopted meditation include:
- Hinduism
- Buddhism
- Christianity
- Islam
- Judaism
Meditation’s Journey to the West
As I continued to explore the history, I discovered that it wasn’t until the 20th century that it gradually seeped into Western culture. In the 1960s, Harvard Medical School professor Herbert Benson began exploring the scientific aspects of meditation. His research revealed that meditators consumed 17% less oxygen than non-meditators, shedding light on the physiological effects of this ancient practice.
Meditation Goes Mainstream
By the 1990s, it’d gained popularity as a trendy pursuit in the United States, attracting the attention of celebrities and becoming a mainstream phenomenon. Today, an estimated 9.3 million American adults engage in meditation on an annual basis – that’s a whole lot of Zen!
The Enduring Legacy of Meditation
Delving into the ancient origins has helped me appreciate its enduring legacy and the profound impact it continues to have on individuals’ well-being across the globe. From its humble beginnings to its current resurgence, meditation serves as a timeless practice that transcends boundaries, connecting us with our inner selves and fostering a sense of peace and tranquillity in an ever-changing world. So, whether you’re seeking solace from cat videos or simply looking for a break from the daily grind, it might just be the answer you’ve been searching for.
Benefits include:
- Improved mental and emotional well-being
- Enhanced focus and concentration
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Greater self-awareness
- A sense of inner peace and tranquillity
Unlocking the Path to Meditation: Five Tips
- Don’t worry if your mind wanders – It’s completely normal for your mind to wonder, especially if you are new to the practice. Try not to get angry or frustrated with yourself, it’s all part of the process. Observe your thoughts and gently guide your mind back to your breath.
- Use your breath as an anchor – Whenever you feel your mind beginning to wander, focus on your breath and use it to anchor yourself into the moment. Take a deep breath and really pay attention to the feeling of your lungs filling with air and then releasing. Take a few deep breaths before you re-focus.
- Let thoughts comeand go – Try not to focus too much or over analyse any particular thoughts or images that come to your mind. Try not to push any thoughts away, simply be aware of them, observe them, and allow them to pass, as if you are the watcher of your mind
- Stretch first – If you have time, try stretching before your start your practice. Nothing too strenuous, just a few gentle stretches can really help to get you in the right head-space.
- Start with short meditations – If you’re new, start slowly, and build up your practice over time. Start with just 2-minute and once you feel comfortable increase your sessions to 5 minutes, then 10 minutes.
