8 Winter Skincare Tips to Keep Your Skin Glowing

Written by Carla Pasco Jones

Adapting Your Skincare Routine for the Winter Season

I love the winter season as it brings cosy moments, hot chocolate…OK, mulled wine, by the fire… and for many of us, a whole lot of dry skin!

While we might enjoy snuggling up under blankets, our skin doesn’t appreciate winter’s frigid air outside and dry heat inside. But don’t panic as I’m going to share some tried-and-tested tips to help you keep your skin hydrated and glowing until spring shows up.

Why You Need an Winter Skincare Routine

Quite simply, just like the weather, our skin’s requirements change with the seasons. Having a one size fits all approach to combat different elements isn’t realistic. So if you take your skincare seriously, then read on…

1. Do Moisturise (And Moisturise Again) – Winter’s low humidity levels zap moisture from the skin, so moisturising once a day may not cut it. Opt for an emollient-rich cream rather than a lightweight lotion—think thick and luxurious! Hydrating twice a day or layering with a facial oil can be a game changer. Oils lock in hydration, particularly when applied under a cream-based moisturiser.

2. Don’t Overindulge in Hot Shower – I get it; a hot shower or lazy soak in a candlelit bath is one of winter’s greatest pleasures. But they can strip essential oils from your skin. Shorter, warm showers are kinder on your skin’s moisture barrier. Also, try limiting soap to key areas, like your face and hands, to keep hydration intact

3. Do Humidify – If you’re cranking up the heating, consider using a humidifier. This can help prevent winter’s notorious dry air from sucking the moisture from your skin. Your face, and plants!, will thank you for it

4. Don’t Over-Cleanse – Gentle cleansing is key during colder months, especially if your skin tends to dry out. Go for a hydrating cleanser like a botanical cleansing balm that leaves your skin feeling soft rather than stripped. My favourite(s) are Hydropeptide’s nourishing Makeup Melt, Botanical Cleansing Balm and the super-gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. Unless your skin is particularly oily, a double cleanse at night is often enough

5. Do Use Masks to Maximise Hydration – Masks can add a layer of intensive hydration and are wonderful for creating a protective barrier on the skin. I love the Miracle Mask & Brighten and Glow Jelly Mask. Hydropeptide have a range of masks to suit all skin types, so make sure you get one to suit your skin’s needs and use them as part of your weekly routine to help lock in hydration.

This is a perfect way to support your skin in between facials.Ā

Bonus: it feels like an at-home mini facial!

6. Avoid the ā€œOver-Wateredā€ Skin Myth –Ā Contrary to popular belief, water alone doesn’t keep skin hydrated. To retain moisture, your skin actually needs oils and lipids. While drinking plenty of water benefits your overall health, moisturising topically with creams and oils is what helps keep your skin’s moisture levels up during winter.

7. Keep the Sun Protection Going –Ā Sun protection is a must, even on chilly, overcast days. Winter sun can still cause UV damage, which dries out skin further and contributes to premature ageing. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (tinted or untinted) and apply it daily before stepping out.

8. Do Treat Yourself to a Professional Facial –Ā Every four to six weeks, step aside and leave it to the professionals! Whilst your busy buying presents for everyone else, take a moment out of your day for yourself. Taking care of your skin is a guaranteed investment that you can reep the dividends for in years to come!

A winter facial can help reset and rejuvenate your skin with targeted ingredients.Ā
